Seeing Neon at Events
Neon pops into event design with a bright, bold, and retro message.
It was the spring and summer of neon, so says Vogue and predictions out of New York Fashion Week. While psychedelic neon hues are all the rage on this year’s fashion pages, neon is popping up plenty in events and experiences. You might say it is fueled by the “electric” influences of EDM festivals and events like the Neon Carnival at Coachella. In other words, bright is back.
Lancôme recently gave its heritage brand a modern punch at its Maison Lancôme event for beauty editors in New York City, held in an urban townhouse where neon accents, including glowing neon signage in a floral trendy “hombre” room, gave the brand a youthful spin. HP leveraged neon experiences and lasers in The Lab and The Lounge activations at Panorama Music Festival in New York City. Its bold domed activation glowed neon HP blue from the outside. In the trade show space, Jaguar’s VR experience at the L.A. Auto Show placed electrified signage in a moody footprint.
Neon signage and logos are “having a moment” in special events and restaurant design, too, according to Bizbash and Tasting Table, offering a burst of energy to sparse or traditional backdrops, and an edgy “urban” feel to modern ones. Among applications of neon in the special event space: simple, glowing neon centerpieces twisted to represent words of inspiration, and a gala event entrance featuring glowing neon signage against a corrugated metal backdrop. Adobe MAX at its Adobe Bash after-party event combined glowing, neon installations with the rustic charm of party lights and an airstream trailer.
Elsewhere in the design space, neon is making its mark in graphic design (and perhaps, your event collateral). Coastal Creative named neon gradients as a top graphic design trend this year, making the case that neon can make digital experiences more energetic. Expect to see bold furniture choices and décor unfolding in the event space, from neon patterns to neon décor that pops against a white backdrop.
We say: Don’t be afraid to go bold with a little glowing signage or a fashionable neon premium—like classic, neon branded wayfarers with a twist. Your trendy attendees will thank you.
