Recapping the 97th Academy Awards

The Academy Awards are about more than just who takes home the prize or who wore it best on the carpet. Beyond being Hollywood’s most celebrated night, it is also one the event industry’s largest hybrid event. At its core, the Oscars are a shared experience—with millions watching at home alongside the thousands of in-person attendees.

From the strategic camera movements to the dynamic lighting, every detail of the production is orchestrated to bring the broadcast to life.

As big fans of events and video in our own right we asked our experts about what they had to say about the 97th Academy Awards.

The Event Overall:

Ariana and Cynthia can do no wrong! As someone who loves a theme, to see them both so fiercely embrace their characters all season long has been such a pleasure to watch.

Amanda Rockwell, Senior Program Manager

The Host:

Conan O'Brien was the perfect host. Hosting the Oscars is tough gig, which explains why they lean on ol'reliables like Jimmy Kimmel, but I think they really found something Conan. He tows the line of self-deprecation and playful jabs at the crowd really well. I think it also helps that he has a personable rapport with much of the audience. I hope he comes back!

Justin Nguyen, Content Coordinator

The Host:

Having a live announcer throughout the event help’s build atmosphere for attendees and viewers at home. Loved how Nick Offerman played off Conan and added his own subtle commentary (the jab at Amy Poehler’s name was great).  I hope they bring him back next year.

Ann Lawrence, Creative Director

The Set:

I really enjoyed the movement of the set. Creating great opportunities for set flexibility, the movement of the panels, the rising of certain parts of the stage for performances was interesting to see. I would say, next time let's keep some of the top nominees closer to the stage. It felt like Sean Baker had to walk far from his seat to the stage, and he won four times!

Micah Lucas, Marketing Manager

The Event Overall:

I think the opening of the Oscars was THE standout moment of the night! It was so well crafted to show support for all that LA has gone through with the recent fires. I loved how they used all the stage technology (LED screens, lighting, scrims, stage fog) to create the perfect emotional atmosphere that drew both the audience in the room and the audience at home into the moment. And best of all… were the powerful performances by Arianna Grande and Cynthia Erivo. Together, they were dynamic, but extra kudos to Cynthia who proved yet again why she was up for a best actress Oscar! Unbelievable performance!!
